Enhance Care for Integrated Skin NTDs in Nigeria
The populations in Zamfara, Benue and Nasawara have high rates of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). These diseases are often highly stigmatised, impacting access to health care, social inclusion and reduces economic opportunities for affected persons and their families.
The project will work to strengthen the capacity of government health workers to diagnose, treat and manage these diseases. At the same time, they will work with local communities to increase their awareness of the diseases, knowledge of when to seek health care and improve their understanding of good hygiene and healthy daily practices.
Government health workers will be strengthened by improving health facilities, ensuring there are adequate resources to manage NTDs.
The project will also establish mini mobile clinics, where tricycles will be equipped with materials to treat leprosy, lymphatic filariasis, Buruli ulcers and other basic health problems. Local community volunteers and health staff will deliver services in remote and hard to reach communities.
Recognising the environmental and cultural factors that can impact on NTD transmission, the project will also work with communities to reduce the stigma around NTDs through creative and engaging methods such as using street dramas, folklore and singing. Additionally, communities will be educated on improving their water and sanitation hygiene practices and will learn strategies to adapt to changing weather patterns.
The Enhance Care for Integrated Skin NTDs in Nigeria project is supported by the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP). Thanks to you and ANCP, these projects can help improve the well-being of people affected by leprosy and disability in Nigeria.
